Objective: To celebrate the enduring friendship between Japan and the U.S. through a collaborative and interactive art installation.
Approach: Each spring, over 1.5 million visitors gather at Washington, DC’s Tidal Basin to witness the breathtaking cherry blossoms, a symbol of Japan’s 1912 gift to the U.S. In 2023, the Embassy of Japan launched #FriendshipTakesFlight, an interactive art installation uniting communities through origami. Through in-person pop-ups and social media engagement, participants contributed over 8,000 handcrafted paper cranes, symbolizing longevity, luck, and peace. The completed installation, unveiled at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center during the G7 Summit, stands as a powerful testament to the strength of Japanese-U.S. relations.
